Compensation for damages
A compensation claim begins with the event, responsibility and consequences. Establishing an injury or expense is only part of the task: the loss must be linked to the event and evidence. The office assists with preparing claims, negotiations and representation where court protection is needed.

Understanding your legal matter
To discuss compensation, connect the account of the event with evidence of the loss. Keep receipts, photographs, relevant records and correspondence with the responsible party or insurer. Identify any claim already submitted or payment received. The available approach depends on responsibility, the circumstances and supporting evidence.
- Reviewing the basis of liability and supporting records
- Approaching the responsible party or insurer
- Representation in compensation proceedings
Financial loss and non-material harm
Financial loss concerns consequences such as damaged property, justified expenses or lost earnings. Non-material harm concerns legally recognised consequences beyond invoices, with separate requirements for each category.
Connect each part of the claim to evidence. A photograph may not establish the value of damage, just as a medical report does not settle every liability question. Expert evidence may be required.
Traffic accidents and insurance claims
Review the participants, insurance and records of the accident. Police documents, a European accident statement where applicable, photographs and injury reports can assist in preparing the claim.
Check what an insurer’s offer covers and whether acceptance amounts to final settlement. Vehicle damage and personal injury need different evidence. Unknown, uninsured or foreign vehicles require a further assessment of the appropriate route.
Workplace injuries
Review the event, work organisation and relevant records. An injury report, information about the role, training, protective equipment and witnesses may be significant. The label given to the event does not settle every issue of liability.
Medical records should show treatment and consequences; income documents support any lost earnings claim. Consider employment rights, insurance and compensation separately so their different legal bases are not confused.
Injuries in public places and involving animals
A fall on a poorly maintained surface or an animal injury requires the place, time and responsible person to be established. For public surfaces, identify the manager; for animals, ownership and circumstances matter.
Photographs, witnesses, reports to relevant services and timely medical records may assist. Liability of a municipality, manager, owner or another person should not be assumed without examining the event and legal basis.
From supporting records to settlement or court
Prepare a chronology and distinguish evidence of the event from evidence of its effects. Identify the proper recipient and the scope of the claim. Any earlier offer or payment should be reviewed for its basis and effect.
Prompt assessment also matters for limitation, which depends on the claim and circumstances. Treatment or negotiations should not be assumed to preserve every claim automatically. Settlement and proceedings are assessed against the evidence.
Documents for the first meeting
- Incident records, photographs and witness details.
- Medical documents, receipts and evidence of lost income.
- Claims, decisions, offers and insurer correspondence.
If you do not have a document, mention this when arranging the meeting. A brief summary is enough for an initial enquiry; send sensitive documents through an agreed channel.
